This song became popular in the USA after the start of the De Colores Movement which is fashioned after the Catholic Cursillo movement. However, unlike the Curisillo De Colores allows all faiths to participate. Hence all faiths...all colors all people = De Colores. This is the song that is sang at every De Colores event.

the reason this is so popular is because crucillo, walk to emmaus, and chrysalis all use it as their anthem. supposedly it was written when a group of catholics got stuck in the country on their way to a retreat/three day weekend/ pilgramage (depending on who you ask). also its just a generally uplifting folk song that many people have had to learn in school

"De Colores" (literally, Of Colors) is a traditional folk-song that is well known throughout the Spanish-speaking world. The song was brought to the Americas from Spain during the 16th century. The words of the song are an expression of joy and a celebration of all creation with its many bright colors. It is also an unofficial anthem for the United Farm Workers union. It is a traditional song with the author unknown.

I miss Tijuana, Mexico SO much! Greetings to everyone in Baja California from Germany.

@poochmon1976 I think the song "De Colores" is very much a peaceful song amongst the Latino-community and has been used for Migrant workers/United Farm Workers of America and their struggles to be treated equally when doing jobs in the fields and farms. I listen to the song Handlebars and one character is singing about peace and being of creative forces and another one is singing about destructive forces and what he could with it.

This song is popular for many reasons. One big one is because it is the "anthem" for the Curcillo movement in the Catholic church. This is a movement that focuses on helping to train lay people to be leaders in their spiritual community. The Curcillo movement has spread to other denominations since it first began in the 1940s.

RE: Previous comment, the most famous is La Rondalla de Salitllo (Saltillo is a city northern Mexico)
Flobots "handlebars" mentions this song in their song. I'm trying to find out why? I'm guessing the reason has something to do with what MujerGuitarrista had mentioned in his/her post.any info on that? a post would be considerate and very helpful. thanks people.

I'm sorry I don't have much info. This is just a song that I have always loved, and I requested this guy to play it while dining in Tijuana. I am shocked by how many hits this video has gotten, and how many positive reviews. There must be something about this song, because it has certainly garnered some attention. Hopefully someone will write a post that knows something about the songs origins and what makes it so popular. I thought this gent gave a great performance.
