Silkie - You've got to hide your love away 1966
Original by 'The Beatles' (1965)

The Silkie was England's answer to American folk music groups like Peter, Paul and Mary. The quartet was made up of students from Hull University and comprised Sylvia Tatler (vocals), Mike Ramsden (guitar and vocals), Ivor Aylesbury (guitar and vocals) and Kevin Cunningham (double bass).

Managed by Brian Epstein, the band received help from John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison to record their cover version of "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away", (on 9 August 1965 at the IBC Studios) at about the same time as The Beatles' own version was being released on their soundtrack album Help!. The song charted in the UK at # 28.

Lyrics
Here I stand head in hand
Turn my face to the wall
If shes gone I cant go on
Feelin two-foot small

Everywhere people stare
Each and every day
I can see them laugh at me
And I hear them say

Hey youve got to hide your love away
Hey youve got to hide your love away

How could I even try
I can never win
Hearing them, seeing them
In the state Im in

How could she say to me
Love will find a way
Gather round all you clowns
Let me hear you say

Hey youve got to hide your love away
Hey youve got to hide your love away

  • that's my mum and dad in the middle - kevin is on the left playing double bass, then mike (dad), sylvie (mum) and then ivor.

it was a Top 10 hit in the states and top 30in the UK.

paul's arrangement and he played the intro on the single, john was in the studio producing and george played the percussion. they were genuinely the only band to record with the beatles....

i'm biased but it is the best beatles cover.

  • Great post!!! This footage is rare and they nailed this song and had a big hit with it.

  • where the hell's got the voice of this slut. poor lennon

  • Every bit as good as the Beatles, besides the lady is MUCH better looking

than ANY of the Fab Four...!!!!!!!!!!

  • WOW!!! This was played by Brisbane radio 4KQ............... Almost as good as the Jan and Dean version. These people are talented!!

  • @jamieramsden007 what's it like seeing them so young? haha

  • A bit too jolly for a sad love song... IMO John's Bob Dylan-ish vocals and the simple arrangement is perfect

  • Be proud of your parents- they and their band mates did a great job on a Beatles song.

  • Great rendition of the Beatles classic hit. I wonder how many people knew about the secret meaning of this sog back when alternative lifestyles were illegal.

  • Sorry, but sometimes too much is just TOO MUCH. Mum is a little flat in her opening verse. This song doesn't need harmonies..it's more expressive when ONE person, apparently love-lost and forlorn, sings it as did John.

  • Beatles were way better then this
