A story of Dennis Shulman's progress in New Jersey's fifth Congressional district. The fifth district, normally a Republican stronghold, is now on the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee's "Red to Blue" program, designed to place national attention on districts the Democratic Party believes can be converted to blue districts.
While the district is mainly Republican, Shulman correctly points out that Republicans in the district are moderates, as was the remarkably popular former Republican incumbent Marge Roukema. Roukema, who served the fifth district for 22 years, once called current Republican incumbent Scott Garrett a "right-wing extremist."
The Bergen Record, North Jersey's newspaper of note, endorsed Shulman in the Democratic primaries, explaining that his "moderate positions and measured tone are appropriate to the diverse district and...will make for an interesting contrast with [Scott] Garrett." (The Record has not yet made an endorsement for this election, but given an opinion piece that came out in the paper the day this news broadcast aired -- "Dobin: Scott Garrett takes the low road": http://www.northjersey.com/opinion/33345069.html, I am personally expecting to see their endorsement very soon.) The New York Times endorsed Dennis Shulman on Saturday, October 25.
