At the 50 Winters Later Concert held at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake Iowa on Feb. 2 2009, it was exactly 50 years to the day of the last concert of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper before they died in a plane crash that night. The Big Bopper's son, JP Richardson, Jr., performed some of his father's hits. This clip is an emotional one, as he finally gets to take home his father's briefcase from the Surf Ballroom, five decades to the day later, as he performs "Chantilly Lace".

  • is that buddy holly on guitar back there?

  • @tallboodyheartsyou13 Sort of... it's Buddy Holly impersonator, John Mueller. He's great.

  • @slimymeteor Who's the guy impersonating Ritchie Valens? I got a shiver when I saw him!

  • @MsCat2U Ray Anthony does Ritchie Valens, and the three of them actually tour together as John Mueller's Winter Dance Party. It's an incredible show that I'd recommend to any rock 'n roll fan.

  • I really enjoyed you performing your dads song Big Bopper Jr.

You are a tangible piece of American History.

And I can See the pride you have in your father though you only knew him for a short while.

  • He didn't sell his dads coffin. The Bopper was being moved to another spot in the cematery, and under Texas law has to be interred in a new coffin.

Bopper Junior donated the coffin to a museum in Texas. Hope this will set things clear with you.

  • Jape was amazing & so is Jay, as much as I love Buddy & Ritchie I always loved Jape the most....not many know that he was an amazing songwriter & he did in fact invent the Music Video in 1959! tell ya' what I'd rather be watchin' "Bopper Vision" rather than MTV ....hmmm maybe this is why I don't watch MTV..............HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! (menacing laughter)

  • I was there that night with my son. Quite a show, After this song he sang another about fathers. I wish I could remember some of the lines but I can't. I wonder if anyone might have a recording of that one? Sure would like to hear it again.

  • Its crazy how they never sold it all those years.

  • very cool

  • You got Richie Valens playing guitar behind the bopper too

  • its amazing!!!

  • This would probably be The Bopper at 50, had he lived. Damn, Jr could pass for him. Great clip.

  • I recently saw a picture of The Bopper's coffin at the mortuary before he was buried, and there was a guitar shaped wreath next to it, sent from Elvis.
