Following her sister's footsteps was always a journey for Danesha Anglin, a native of Ocala, Fla., who fell in love with UF after her sister's acceptance. Anglin's parents weren't able to afford college and gave little hope for her and her sister. It was when her sister received the Florida Opportunity Scholarship that gave Anglin the confidence in making Gainesville her new home.
"When my sister got in my parents had no idea how she was going to make it," Anglin said. "But the scholarship gave both of us the chance to have the college experience together."
Now Anglin and her sister are studying without hurting their parents' pockets. Anglin is planning to become an elementary school teacher in UF's College of Education's five-year graduate program. She plans on opening up a local teacher center in Gainesville so she can give back to her community.
"The Florida Opportunity Scholarship helped me pick my major and I'd probably be lost in college without it," Anglin said. "I really want to stay in Gainesville so I can help improve the education here."
Anglin is a resident assistant at the Broward Hall campus facility and spends her off-time volunteering at her local church and youth group. Without the scholarship, she says, her dream of becoming a Gator would have just been a fantasy.
"UF has helped our family succeed," Anglin said. "To say the scholarship is just money alone means nothing to what the program really is."
My name is Floyd Anglin ( no bull) and I am vary happy for you.
