S1sherlock you have a great ear! Test the pitch at the end and compare it to the beginning. It is different.

No, Zargon314. The original and period form is sung "sprit." The modern option is pronounced phonetically, "spear-it." I personally prefer the period pronounciation. Maybe that's because "sprit" doesn't challenge the legato phrasing as much. Too many consonant sounds makes legato harder to execute.
