to act on a principal based on morals is bravery in itself.
Granted not all lies are bad per se... some are excuted for a greater or a lesser evil. but there has better be a good reason behind it. and that reason has to be made known.
I'd have done the same thing as you, question your friend so that you know you ain't doing anything particularly bad so to speak.

first off, a good friend that valued the relationship he has with you would not have put you in that situation in the first place. I'm with you and agree that if it was something benign, he would have told you (but would not have had to lie about his where-abouts in the first place.) I would have asked the same questions you did, and then I would have told him I couldn't do that, then if the phone rang and trusting a caller ID, I would not have answered it. :(

You're right Ronnieboy,
You don't want to get caught up in someone's lies or be apart of someone's schemes - you did the right thing for sure.

If he wasn't up to no good, he would have shared his reason for requesting this of you. For example, if he was out buying a gift for his wife or planning a surprise party for her... then lying for him would be okay, I guess. :O)

You don't want to get in the middle of something like that. A small lie can turn into a big lie really fast.

I would not have lied. If he is a friend, he would have understood your stance on lying. You seem like a genuine person, and if the person IS a friend, then he should have never called you to begin with
You did the right thing buddy!! You should never have to lie for anyone!!
Truth planted in the wrong season yields no fruit. If he were a great friend I would have considered the moral/ethics of leaving a friend out to dry befor I questioned the actual lie. But he didn't seem like that good of a friend so I would have done the something you did. If it was a good friend (say Amil) I would have lied and not thought twice about it.

I would say Amil would never have put me in such a situation. Amil would have asked me for advise. He would not ask me to go and tell a lie. This one who asked me to lie for him is not someone who I put my trust in.
