Uranium mining in the Athabasca Basin region in Northern Saskatchewan was developed in the early 1950s. The mines developed during this period were abandoned, leaving deep holes and mining debris exposed. Project CLEANS (Cleanup of Abandoned Northern Sites), led by the Saskatchewan Research Council, is a multi-year project aimed at the cleanup (environmental remediation) of 38 abandoned mine sites in the Athabasca Basin region.

  • I grew up in Uranium City..

I have been to all these places in the movie. How is a hole in the wall (from an old mine) 500 miles from population and a lake as large as a great lake in the way a hazard to the public? Sounds like a waste of money.. You can drive there.

Stainless steel over a head frame hole?? St. Mike's, Fay, Ace and others head frame openings were sealed with concrete. Why would this not work?

  • @greg0grimshaw Thanks for your comment. SRC is working to remediate the sites as safely as possible, with guidance from government regulatory agencies and input from communities local to the area. We’ve considered many options for remediation, based on safety and resources, and the ones we’ve chosen are reflected in this video. If you have any more questions about the project, please feel free to contact us at cleans@src.sk.ca or visit our website saskcleans.ca.

  • @naturespaths Thanks for your comment! We should have a video with updates on the project sometime this year, so stay tuned.

  • Didn't mention the gold mines (Goldfields) and the mercury tailing ponds there.

  • Great initiative!
