Highlights from the BFI National Archive's extensive collection of films shot in Tibet prior to the Chinese occupation can now be seen in the BBC/BFI co-production, 'The Lost World of Tibet' (2008). Featuring a potent interview with the Dalai Lama an extended version the documentary is available to buy on DVD from the BFI Filmstore - http://filmstore.bfi.org.uk/acatalog/info_7836.html

Tibetan Scenes was made by Tsien-Lien Shen in the early 1940s - he was resident Chinese Commissioner in Lhasa from 1942-47. The colour film records many of the ceremonial events that took place in Lhasa, including the New Year ceremonies, and Shen himself appears in the film. There is also evidence of the presence of the Chinese in Lhasa.

Although the majority of the film focuses on Tibetan ceremonies, there are some invaluable scenes capturing everyday life in Lhasa, as monks, porters, market stall sellers and the occasional yak compete for space. (Jan Faull)

You can now watch over 20 hours of films made in Tibet between 1922 and 1949 in the Mediatheque at BFI Southbank. These include the films of plant hunter and botanist George Sherriff (his love of nature is reflected in the remarkable jewel-like colours of his films); Frederick Bailey: Political Agent, butterfly collector and spy and remarkable footage of Mallory and Irvine's ill-fated attempt to conquer Everest. http://www.bfi.org.uk/mediatheque

  • Tibet had a great culture before chinese aggression. chinese completely ruined the Tibet.

    FREE TIBET.

  • Mao caused starvation by forcing Tibetan farmers to plant wheat.

Wheat is not suitable for the harsh climate of Tibet and the wheat crop failed.

That is communism for you. People at the top thinking they know more than other people. But the world has woken up and most communist countries have seen the light and given up on communism.

If they don't have any talent they won't get voted into power or they will get voted out fairly quickly.

  • @ TheRemember2010

Tibetans got rid of the Death Penalty in 1913. Many countries have failed to do that 98 years later.

Tibetans were advanced in their thinking.

  • To whom should i blame though! for myself! tell me one good thing about these people? what made you inspired with these noble families, what were the nobles about them? are you still one of them in 21rst C? we don't welcome you in Tibetan society now. I am certain not in my county. Never!

  • @TheRemember2010 We cannot simply blame all the errors to them like this. As we all know we entered into this modern world without much gap between old system and new system unlike rest of the nation where they gradually changed into new government style.

  • i hate those fucker, so called noble family. corrupt system, still exist among Tibetans in exile. These were the people, who sold our freedom for their enjoyment. What we have now, these bloody fuckers!
