    the rhythm is mendiani. i know the pulse and i understand what he's doing. mostly it comes down to aural aesthetics. the current trend in djembe playing, especially with the younger generations is for fast and technical phrasing. i think of it as soloing "on top" of the rhythm. the old masters do it too, but just not as often nor in the style of the younger generations. it's the evolution of the instrument.
