Rising thousands of feet above the Colorado River Valley, the Roan Plateau is a place of wild abundance. Elk, deer and pure strains of cutthroat trout are prized inhabitants. The plateau itself is a rippling landscape of canyons, streams and waterfalls, blanketed with forests and plants.
But at the foot of the Roan is a pockmarked vision of its future if the federal government succeeds in leasing away 55,000 acres of public lands for industrial oil and gas drilling. Drilling rigs and their concrete emplacements are carved into vast areas of the plains; gas lines and service roads criss-cross the region. It has all the appearance of an exploited moonscape.
When there will be no NEED to drill, the process of drilling will cease. Till that time, drilling will continue. The sale of the Roan prceeded just as the need for oil and natural gas processed. Coloradians are welcome to do all they can stop oil companies but Im afraid your efforts will be in vain. You spoke loudly to BLM officials, though they did turn a deaf ear to you and from what I witness, protesters became an annoyance rather than a hinderance.
