It' svery rare to see a dolphin swimming in Nantucket Sound much less inside the harbor. This is third time in my career I have seen a dolphin in one of our harbors. Unfortunately this one becomes another example of 10dolphins this fall in which only one survived the hardship of the strnding. Stranding network team said this 8 ' common dolphin was undersized for its length.
Male dolphin dies after Harwich stranding

December 16, 2009 4:07 PMHARWICH - A male dolphin, stranded in about 8 inches of water off Saquatucket Harbor, died this afternoon.
Jane Hoppe, the stranding technician for the International Fund for Animal Welfare, said rescue authorities were notified around 1:30 p.m. today.
Within 90 minutes, the roughly 6-foot-long dolphin had died, Hoppe said.
The latest dolphin was about the 10th that has been found stranded around Cape Cod in the past two weeks, Hoppe said. "We released a few," she said, while the others were found dead or had to be euthanised.
It has yet to be determined whether there is a mass stranding happening or whether these are individual cases. The number of stranding typically increases in the winter, she said.
