@Bananayoghurt1000 I was wondering the same thing, and I would also like to know the reason the first prize wasn't awarded that year(and the year after I think). Does anyone know? I've looked everywhere for an answer, but have found nothing yet.

one of the few pianists who could turn colleagues into incoherent stammerers at his recitals! Horowitz and Glenn Gould had the same impact, you'd leave the hall feeling you had witnessed an impossible miracle!

@demosj ive always imagined that young (like pre-40s) horowitz probably sounded a lot like sultanov
I'm one of the lucky ones who played Tchaikovsky concerto with him. It was a true magic! amazing playing.

@Bananayoghurt1000 Actually, the judges were to much unsympathetic, they also didn't give 1st prices to best Mazurka, Concerto or Polonaise.
