Wilhelm Steinitz (1836-1900) was the first official Chess Champion of the world. Nicknamed "The Austrian Morphy," he gained international prominence by beating unofficial world champion Adolf Anderssen in a match. Later, after 1873, he would introduce the first "modern positional style" both in his writing and in his play over the board. Arguably, he is the most influential World Chess Champion of all time.
