Romans Chapter 13 Revisited
by Chuck Baldwin
July 15, 2009

Romans Chapter 13. I quote Romans Chapter 13, verses 1 through 7, from the Authorized King James text:

"Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake. For this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God's ministers, attending continually upon this very thing. Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour."

This means that, in America, the "higher powers" are not the men who occupy elected office; they are the tenets and principles set forth in the U.S. Constitution. Under our laws and form of government, it is the duty of every elected official to obey the U.S. Constitution (and his or her State constitution). Therefore, this is how Romans Chapter 13 reads to Americans:

"Let every soul be subject unto the [U.S. Constitution.] For there is no [Constitution] but of God: the [Constitution] that be [is] ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the [Constitution], resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. For [the Constitution is] not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the [Constitution]? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: For [the Constitution] is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for [the Constitution] beareth not the sword in vain: for [the Constitution] is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake. For this cause pay ye tribute also: for [the Constitution is] God's minister, attending continually upon this very thing. Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour."

As a result, Christians in America (for the most part) have not had to face the painful decision to "obey God rather than men" and defy their civil authorities.

The problem in America today is that we have allowed our political leaders to violate their oaths of office and to ignore--and blatantly disobey--the "supreme Law of the Land," the U.S. Constitution. Therefore, if we truly believe Romans Chapter 13, we will insist and demand that our civil magistrates submit to the U.S. Constitution.

Now, how many of us Christians are going to truly obey Romans Chapter 13?

  • This video stop ed half way but win I heard the end We conclude the same thing thank you and God keep you we are in for hard times.

  • Thank you for commenting. :=)

  • The constitution is the law of the land and We AND our Leaders are subject to the law of the land WE need to hold them to it that is the Constitutional Republic we are after all not a democracy but a republic go with God not man.

  • Our, constitutional republic, government is an interesting experiment and one where We The People are the government. Thus, we are held responsible for the very evils many would like to blame on those 'elected' to public office. We The People have a duty and are bound by the very instrument to be educated, active and vigilant in making sure the elected persons are dutiful. What is their duty? Essentially to run the small 10 miles square called D.C., borders and international treaties, period.

  • absolutely excellent

God Bless you my wonderful friend

  • Thanks for video. We are in this mess largely because Christians have been lazy, complicit, derelict. Way too supportive of a government driven by envy, jealousy, covetousness, hate, theft, fear.

If Christians want to respect civil authority, then they might want to look to the ultimate civil authority in the U.S., that is , the U.S. CONSTITUTION. That is our authority. So it is hypocritical to say we must submit to laws and then totally ignore, and indeed be ignorant of, the constitution

  • 1 Timothy 2:12 (King James Version)

But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. becides, the koine was talking about the eccleastical power, not the blackmailed bi-sexual paedofiles that are illeagally occupying the whitewash house, the world church is and had to become apostate for revelation to manifest.

  • So you support the murder of an Innocent who has done no one wrong by the way Jim Crow was a democrat that got to sting and Abraham Lincoln was a republican.

  • There are several governments- I already stated my view which one is excluded from the matter.

I would rather iron out a state law than federal as the founders intended.

I do not believe the SCOTUS should rule on elections.

  • So in your opinion the government should have the power to force a woman to carry a fetus against her will?

We tried the state's rights thing, remember? It gave us 100 years of Jim Crow. Maybe you're okay with that, eh?

My sense is that you're rather selective in your preference for state's rights. Did you object when the Republicans on the US Supreme Court overruled a unanimous decision of the Florida Supreme Court after the 2000 election and refused to let Florida count the votes?

  • We all have our particular issues for some it's abortion, others it's pollution.

If we don't save the constitutional republic now and I mean really restore it to full force ie STRICTLY LIMITED enumerated federal gov powers All others sovereignly held by the States and We The People, our 'pet' issues are MOOT.

I do not believe in abortion especially federal gov paying for it, especially for foreigners.
