  • In addition to medication, behaviour modification is a very important aspect to the treatment of storm phobias as the fear generally increases without treatment. Sometimes we use two different meds such as a TCA or SSRI and a benzodiazepine as part of the treatment plan.

  • Just for your info, there is a licensed medication for dogs with car issues called Cerenia. Much safer than using acepromazine.

  • ACE is a killer for many breeds. Please know your breeds before you allow your dog to have to from ANY vet for ANY reason. It drops the blood pressure and heart rate to much.

  • @AVSABehavior I have actually tried behavior modification(playing storm sounds, giving him things to distract him, playing calming music, crate training, spraying DAP, etc.)and he has tried a variety of medications ranging from benadryl, clomipramine, valium, etc. and even still with ace it is not 100% effective, but has at least made significant improvement. If only I could convince him there is no danger during a storm other than what he inflicts upon himself! This has been a 7 year problem.

  • what do you recommend for dogs then? i have a dog that has major storm phobia, so much so that he has caused thousands of dollars of damage to material goods as well as himself. i have researched ace and don't like its mechanism of action, but am stuck because i don't want to come home to my dog injured (or worse..).

  • I used ACE on my dog for a cross country trip. It worked like a charm. I would highly recommend it for car sensitive dogs on long trips.

  • I've detested acepromazine for these reasons for years. Thank you for saying it at TNAVC!
