Just bought a new DC14 and right out of the box it started making that noise. What it is is that the belt drive/gear shaft is rubbing against the plastics inside the housing unit, the only way to fix it is to actually take it apart and grind down the inside but that will void your warranty, if you exchange it for another one it does the exact same thing. What I do is rest it by clicking it upright and changing the barefloor setting back to carpet and then back down again, this helps but a pain.

the best vacuum for that kind of carpet is a miele. go see your local vacuum dealer

most likely the carpet has no air flow. IE....a rubber or similiar material on the back of your carpet is restricting the air flow. In this case it's like the fake oreck bowling ball trick, no flow the thing is stuck....like if you stick the hose on ur belly. In turn the carpet gets sucked to the brushbar(as they call it) thereby triggering the built in mechanism in the clutch assembly to ratchet alerting you to a problem. Run over a dish towel it'll do the same thing.........Dyson tech

That's the only thing we can figure out, it sucks so hard it's sucking the carpet into the channel and the brush is getting jammed making the horrific clicking sound.
If I go fast back and forth it seems to stop
On our regular carpet, I can see it actually pulling the carpet up!

So it's making the noise because the carpet isn't attached to the ground?
