The fish that changed color when it settled on the boat, whats the name of the that specific fish?
Doctorchris100 6 months ago
@Doctorchris100 That is a Mahi-Mahi, which is Hawain for "very strong". They are also known as a dolphin fish, lampuga, lampuka, rakingo, calitos, maverikos, or dorado. The Latin name is Coryphaena hippurus. All the fish in the video are Mahi-Mahi, except for the Atlantic bonito at 3:57.

nice day of fishing, beautiful fish..Only thing I don't understand is why you didn't kill them before throwing them in a bucket... suffecate with a hole in your head, isn't the nicest way to die.. fish do have nerves...( I'm totally not against fishing though). except from fishing the oceans empty, as we are doing now... And that's not good news for sport fisherman...

@siesss I guess we were just too busy catching fish to worry about it. Dorado swim in schools, so when you land one, you are in a hurry to get back in the water ASAP. Also we were with a professional guide and following his lead. However, those aren't good excuses and you make a good point. Since that trip I have made more of an effort to humanely dispatch my prey.

@siesss As for fishing the oceans empty, I am very worried about that too and I would support banning all netting and long lining. If everybody fished with a rod and reel I don't think our oceans would be in peril. Fish would be way more expensive, but I only eat what I catch anyway so that’s fine with me.

I agree with yellowfin84. That fish is less than 30 lbs for sure. And that's a skipjack tuna not a blackfin. Skipjacks are edible too but they are certainly not a blackfin.
Regardless you had a great day over there and caught some really respectable fish. Cheers.

@nickv6909 Agreed it most definitely was not a Blackfin tuna. That was wishful thinking on my part! You are correct. That is a Skipjack, A.K.A. Artic Bonito at 3:50. The meat looked just as deep red and appetizing as a Bluefin, but it certainly did not taste very good in our opinions. We ended up using it for bait.
