Hi, my name is Sheila Sarratore and I am the Alumni Admissions Volunteer Coordinator. This is going to be a quick snap shot of what you can expect as a volunteer at a college fair.
To give you a little bit of background, college fairs are events where colleges and universities send a representative to share information with families and students about their institution.
When volunteering for a college fair we have two types of college fairs that we do offer. The first is going to be the National College Fair. These events are very large and typically in metropolitan markets where you would be assisting an Admissions Counselor in speaking with families. The other is the local college fair or night and that is where you would be a representative or RIT.
College fairs are held in the fall from September to November and in the Spring in April and May. At these events you will typically be speaking with juniors and seniors in high school. The questions will range from very program-specific questions to more general can you tell me a little bit more about RIT.
At college fairs you will have a table with information as a resource. If youre at a National College Fair, this information will be brought by the Admissions Counselor. If you are representing RIT at a college night, this information will be shipped to you with descriptions on what everything is.
The two major messages that are really important for you to convey while youre at a college fair is first, if the student can make it to campus to visit, thats a great opportunity for them to see facilities, see campus, and see how they feel on campus. The second message is if they can fill out an information card. By filling out that information card, we can collect a lot of information and send them the appropriate mailings and invitations. Its also important that at a college fair youre standing behind the table so families and students can approach you with any questions they may have.
These families are really looking forward to hearing your stories and getting some info from you. If you are unfamiliar with a topic area, you can always refer to another department or myself. Just remember to have a good time; the students and families are really looking forward to speaking with you. Thank you for volunteering.
