  • Free verse? Any damn fool can write that, and most of it is mediocre, anyway. Rhyme scheme? Much more difficult, and has the beauty of cadence accompanying imagery.

  • One of my favorite poems by one of my favorite poets. I heard him read this at Rackham Auditorium in Ann Arbor back when Hotel Insomnia first came out--or was it before the publication of the book? Well, it was around the The World Doesn't End/Hotel Insomnia period. Since I spent much of my time with my nose in battered 2nd-hand copies of Henry Vaughan and Sir Thomas Browne and other old birds, I identified. After the reading I went to the party for Simic. I flattered and bored him. He was kind.
