34 - Time Traveler: Voyage With Columbus - Pages 52 & 53

You've made your choice--for the moment you'll stay and see what happens. But now you have to get back to the village.

The position of the sun tells you which way to go. You hurry along with Tatpan, hoping to get back before dark.

Zipp! An arrow flies past you and lands in a tree trunk!

You spin around. Warlike natives are creeping through the bushes. They seem to be trying to surround you and cut you off!

"Caribs!" Tatpan screams.

She grabs you and you both begin to run. You've heard about this fierce tribe from some of the sailors. The Caribs live on an island nearby. Sometimes they come over to attack the peaceful Tainos. They rain villages and burn huts. They take people away and make them slaves. Your friend Juan says the Caribs are cannibals, too!

"Faster!" you shout to Tatpan. "They're gaining!"

You race through the jungle with the Caribs hot on your trail, howling, whooping, and firing arrows.

Tatpan stumbles. You stop and pull her to her feet. Then you rush on. The village is a long way off. The Caribs are closing in!

Of course, you could jump and save yourself. But you can't desert your friend. So you'll have to keep going. If you fail, you'll both end up as slaves--or in a cooking pot!

Tatpan is gasping for breath. She's beginning to stumble again. You're tired, too. Neither of you can hold out much longer.

Suddenly you freeze. You're on the edge of a deep ravine! It's twenty feet across, and the sides go straight down!
