The funny thing is, rappers never asked to be famous. You say that rap music is just someone talking over a beat... well they ARE talking.. the origin of a rapper is the MC, a DJ plays music and the MC talks over it to pump the crowd up. Then MCs got more into their own act and put themselves over the DJ that plays the music or the beats, and someone realized that people would buy that stuff. Just remember what the origin of hip hop is before you question how legitimate it should be.

Rap is a swearing contest, while R&B Is a guy singing about how horny he is for a girl he met at a bar, nothing about true emotional love (though there are some MEANINGFUL songs out there that are exceptions)
