Charlie is absolutely u---nique. He left us way too soon. God bless. Benny loved him.

Charlie's technique with single string lines brought the guitar into the realm of lead instruments. That and his being a seminal figure in the formation of bebop are what make him so well remembered. It's such a shame that he died three years after this recording.

Charlie was a prodigious and towering figure in his era, but the electric guitar wasn't news in 1939. Others before and contemporary to him who'd played the electric guitar at least part time include: Django, Allan Reuss, Freddie Green, Teddy Bunn, Oscar Alemann, Eddie Durham, George Van Eps, Gilbert Torres, Carl Kress, Dick McDonough and the king of them all: Eddie Lang.

Man, this is music I imagine my grandfather would have loved. But it still kicks butt today!

This is something man. Electric guitars in 39! Must have been one of the first. I didn't expect to hear these until at least a few years later in the 40s.
