Stretch Drive's Randy Moss takes a look back at the career of Ruffian, the best filly to ever set foot on the track. Sorry about the out-of-sync audio.

Frank Y. Whiteley trained champions such as Tom Rolfe, Damacus, and Forego, but he is best remembered as the trainer of Ruffian. Two days after her death he glanced at her old stall at Belmont and said, "That stall will never be occupied as long as I have this barn. There'll never be another horse worthy of entering it."

  • I truly believe, had she not broken down, that she would've beaten Foolish Pleasure. She was truly a great champion, like Barbaro, she was gone too soon. I miss her.

  • "the only race she didn't win, was the one that took her life"

  • very well done!

  • im totaly SICK of people saying that Zenyatta is the queen and the greatest female racehorse ever!

they obviously have never heard of ruffian or they are the most stubbornest people alive!

when ruffians times and track records still havnt been touched!

the only record of ruffians that has been beaten is her 13 length lead in the mother goose, rachel alexandra beat her lengths with 19 legnths but NOT her time...

Ruffian is the TRUE and ONLY racing queen!

  • Your videos are superb!! You have allowed me to relive so many memories from my childhood. Thanks to your numerous execellent videos I have been able to see great horses from history!!! I have laughed, cried, smiled, and the hairs on the back of my neck have stood up at times in awe of various great horses majesty and beauty.I think i speak for more people than you suspect when I say THANKYOU!!! THANKYOU!!!!THANKYOU!!!

  • i remember when the movie of her came out was the same day that rags to riches won the belmont! and when rags came down the stretch with curlin the announcer said "these two in the battle of the sexes! in the belmont stakes curlin in the inside rags to riches on the outside a desperate finish. rags to riches and curlin their comeing down to the wire its going to be very close and its going to ... a filly in the belmont!!" amazing day in history!!

  • I love this report and thanks for posting.

And I truly love the commercial at the end for laminitis.

We need to find a cure.

  • I'm actually in agreement with Bill Nack, they would have raced to the wire together.

  • My horse has laminitis. Well he was my horse but I had to give him up. This fund is one that I hold close to my heart! Im glad ppl are getting the word out. It is a terrible disease and no horse owner should have to go throught what I did. Im 15 and I was 11 when I found out I would never ride Hippy again. It took a lot of maturity to get through it. Im still not over it. I learned a lot and I did mature a lot but I will never forget the day i cried more than I ever have.

  • Crafty, Mr. W. passed away the day before Eight Belles' tragic death.I am only thankful that he did not have to bear witness to the breakdown of another champion filly. RIP Belle, Mr. W, and of course Ruffian......forever in my heart!

  • RIP, Frank Whiteley. It's so strange to see footage of him again....

  • We recently lost Frank Whitely, he was 93 years old. He had said once that he thinks about her every day. To Texjoyrn1, I too believe she had the colt beaten. There will never be another....
