Another reason not to own a Samoyed, they shed! About twice a year my girls blow all their undercoat. Here is a clip of a short grooming session. I kept having to stop and start recording because it's easier on the computer. It came out to about 25 minutes of actual grooming. I sped it up for time and space and a little less boring.
And she's not done blowing yet! There is still more loose hair to get out.

  • That is incredible! My Samoyed Jasper is only 6 months and hasn't blown his coat for the first time yet.. but whenever I brush his hair he freaks! He won't sit still like your Sam! How'd you get her to do that? To sit still for so long?

  • A lot of training. Clover has been trained to do this on a grooming table since she was 10 weeks old. Her breeder probably worked her some younger than that also. When training start combing as gently as possible so that it is an enjoyable thing for the dog. Reward every so often to encourage the dog to sit there for this. The other important thing is that a young dog will have a harder time sitting still than an adult dog. Plan to do a 5 minute session to start with.

  • If he has a certain area that he hates most do that section in the middle. Groom some, go to that spot and then groom another that he tolerates. This way you are stopping on a good note instead of him battling you about it. If he acts bad and then you stop he learns that acting like that will make you stop.

  • Hi! So Jasper is now 8 months old and blowing his coat BIG TIME!

We've done some work on grooming and he's much better now, but I'm wondering.. what grooming tool do you use for your Sams? You seem to be getting SO much hair off in one go! Right now I just use a steel comb, which is what was recommended to me, but I'm wondering if there's something better?

  • I'm just using a comb on her. Sometimes they only blow a little at a time. Clover starts on her thighs but within a few days all of it is loose and easy to comb out.

  • All 3 of mine are trained to be groomed like this from a very young age. It makes everything so much easier than having to wrestle with them. It is also easieron them, there is no stress at all (except for maybe the jealous ones who think they are missing out on some attention).

  • I had a Samoyed that lived to be 13

(Patty RIP) and she was the best dog one could ever have. I remember brushing her a lot, especially in the spring. The birds would take her fur to line their nests.

In fact, Patty was so mellow that she would lie in the yard and let the birds pull the tufts of loose fur from her coat. I guess they had a mutual understanding. I'd like to get another Samoyed again.

  • OMG! we can make a sweater this that fur for the homeless than throwing the fur out! right

  • 2:20 the dog is consumed by fur. May he rest in fleece.

  • What I would give for my husky to lie still while I brushed him..

  • Omg !!! this is a very hard job.. haha..

  • How much do Samoyeds shed in between blowing their coats?

  • I've heard that some people actually buy samoyeds fur and make jumpers out of it. You should see if you can sell the fur on ebay or something and buy your sammy something nice with the money you make :) you have two beautiful dogs by the way. My German Shepherd Sheba just passed away there yesterday, i know its early days yet to be looking for another dog but i'll definately be getting a sam next :)

  • That looks like hair from my great pyrenees lol.

  • I love this video! I would love to own a Sammy someday and wanted to see a grooming video when I found yours! They look like they shed like my longcoat Akita :) I made a similar video to show people wanting Akita how much they shed using my standard coat girl :) Again great video! :)

  • NIce, very nice. I have to do the same with my Samoyed every time.
