  • I'm inclined to say that the reason it doesn't work is because of poor technique and control rather than strength. The entire principle behind aikido is that it doesn't require strength, you're using the opponent's energy and strength, so you need not exert yourself. Either the uke isn't serious and commited to the attack, or the technique is weak. Aikido isn't an art created to use against people who are only holding back to prove you have no power. It's for defense against commited attacks.

  • That's what I meant by commitment... Friends will intentionally hold back to see if it's really an effective... if you can actually do it.

Anyone who is seriously going to attack you will be throwing their momentum into an attack. They won't be holding back or pulling their punches, etc. They'll be coming at you full force and if you use the technique right with good timing, they can't stop it because it's their own strength being used against them. Not your own. Try studying some Aikido first

  • @markitymark09 I don't recall saying they'll attack like idiots. But regardless of what you said, even if someone is looking to expose your weakness, they'll still be committed to the attack when they choose the moment to go through with it. Whether they've planned it out thoroughly or not doesn't change the amount of energy behind the attack. It all boils down to how well-trained and responsive you are anyway. Planned or idiotic - you'll fail either way if you aren't well-practiced in your art.

  • @aerintwin I beg to differ. A serious attacker will be looking to expose your weakness prior to making any kind of commitment - at all. They won't just throw themselves at you. They will work on you a little until the moment is right to strike - when they're sure that can connect. You mustn't get used to thinking that people will just sort of launch an attack like an idiot without any preamble. Even middle schoolers know this intuitively.

  • Yeah, this applies to any martial art. Nothing works if you're no good at it. No one does traditional aikido with all the correct breathing and steps when in a real situation. All you have to do is break something and leave. Taking a bow afterwards is optional.

  • And a useless one at the same time!

  • Oh man i love you.... Well said.... enough said

  • you sayd me nothing not i dont know.you sux... im just 5 kyu in aikido and all what you say i know...jeez i would like to show you what i mean...but no you are the best sry i forgot

  • gimme a break... you do it because they all know how to protect theyrselfs so they relaxed....try it on friend who doesn't study aikido and has bit muscles ;)

  • Actually, I did. I'm only 5'1 and I weigh just over 100lbs and I trained in a dojo full of men as the only woman there. So yes, I have tried it on MANY people much, much stronger than myself. Therefore, I reiterate.... poor technique and control, poor timing, lack of commitment, etc. but definitely not because of strength.

  • yeah i know... but i see you never tryed it on someone strong
