I have been trying to learn yang style tai chi in my free time to help with depression and anxiety and really just sort of find something to get my mind off of everyday life and tune into my own energies. i found these videos very informational and helpful compared to many others. thank you.

This is a really nice, detailed series for orthodox Yang style. Great stuff.

with step up and back, which foot initiates this movement? I ask as in the first examples for the most part the front foot lifts first for step forward and step back, yet in the later examples the back foot moves first for both movements. Or does it vary depending on the situation?

Stepping up means the same foot remains in the forward position. In that case, the forward foot remains rooted while the rear foot is brought up, and then the forward foot is replaced forward. The same for the steeping back. The forward foot remains rooted until the rear foot is replaced , then it is moved.

i thought after steeping back, the front leg is suppose to be turning by the toes rather than the heel at 7:43 ..

I always turn on the heel. Some people don't. I guess it depends on how one learns and practices.
