More Contaminated Chinese Food Products Uncovered

Now for the latest development on contaminated food products from mainland China. The Taiwanese government has discovered even more contaminated goods. NTD's Ben Hedges tells us what they are.

STORY:
Ammonium bicarbonate is a levering agent used in the manufacture of cookies, bread and some Chinese snacks. The Taiwanese Department of Health held a press conference to announce the discovery of high levels of the chemical melamine in ammonium bicarbonate powder, imported from mainland China. Director Wang Je-Chau tells us more about the situation.

[Wang Je-Chau, Spokesman, Department of Health]:
last night we discovered Ammonium Bicarbonate powder containing the chemical melamine so we immediately banned the sale of this powder.

[Wang Je-Chau, Spokesman, Department of Health]:
We have given the information to the food safety section of the World Health Organization. Through the organizations the Mainland Affairs Council, the Sea Base Association and the Association of Cross Strait Relationship, we will let mainland China know this information. We hope they can actively investigate the reason why this ammonium bicarbonate powder contains melamine.

The powder contains between 70 and 300 parts per million of melamine, the legal limit for melamine in food products in Taiwan is 2.5 parts per million.
