However, I'm presuming the majority of the audience is there for the first time, so where exactly were they programmed? Over the idiot box? At 2:23, it sounds like a large percentage of the audience is laughing at a clearly sober, non-humorous comment. The rhythms of Letterman's speech are so ingrained in the auditory-limbic-cortical neural pathways of his audience members, that the antecedents to the laughter response override the semantic analysis of Dave's speech. You, watching this clip, have different expectations than the audience. The audience members laughing inappropriately aren't stupid...they're programmed.
