Actually, I think it is a parody of the American Gothic style of theater, like what Sam Shepherd writes - Buried Child especially. Sorry to sound like a theater nerd :). I worked on Buried Child in college as an assistant stage manager, and this sketch made me laugh really hard.

Like most of Exit 57, this clip makes ZERO sense, and yet is still pretty funny. I think Stephen looks pretty good here.
