Separation of Church and State is implicit and a huge part of the spirit of the First Amendment. Sanchez rightly points to Jefferson & Madison's involvement in crafting the notion of Separation. They correctly argued that without separation, you leave both government and church vulnerable to interference in the affairs of one by the other. This is a very simple principle that, (while not explicitly mentioned in the document), provides our Constitution with great balance and common sense.
