This isn't the original. This is from 1969. The Walker Brothers also did a brilliant version in 1966 I think. But the first version I know is by the Guess Who, believe it or not, when they were still Chad Allen and the Expressions, in 1965.

It was Richard Carpenter who spotted this record and recognized its potential for the Carpenters. He was great at finding songs in the strangest places, movie soundtracks, obscure album cuts, music he was just hearing casually. The original Ruby recording was excellent but never heard much. The genius knew exactly what to do with it.
