The number of focus points has nothing to do with Depth of Field.

nikons also win with low noise, but because of their relatively lower resolutions. however, for the average person, 10-12 is plenty. 6 mp is usually fine, which is why i'd say the d40 would be a great entry-level dslr. also the most economic way to go :D

sorry i went biased there XD canons are great too. any will produce great images, neither is better than the other. just look at things that are more important to you.
