The NAT GAS Act (HR-1380) AKA The Pickens Bill is a prime example of Crony Capitalism. It provides tax incentives (eliminating the cost) to companies that convert their large trucks (not cars or vans) to use Natural Gas. It also provides tax breaks for creating Natural Gas distribution at fueling stations and companies that provide the conversion services (all companies that Pickens has a stake in).
We need to get off foreign oil, but the free market can do it on its own.

This legislation is opposed by groups such as American Majority, Americans for Tax Reform, Americans For Prosperity, The Club for Growth" and Heritage Foundation.

  • The "free market" will decide what's best rhetoric was designed by conservatives to keep America addicted to foreign oil. This bill gives a five year kick start to an industry that is straddled by a lack of fueling infrastructure and a lack of vehicles, caught in a never ending chicken and egg scenario, being strangled by restrictions by the EPA that are already interfering in the "free market". This bill is designed to balance out the high cost of vehicle conversions to natural gas due to EPA

  • Congress already hands out subsidies for petroleum so they have already picked a "winner" in the market: BIG OIL. The reason that natural gas vehicles are EVERYWHERE in the rest of the world is because it is cheap to convert a car to operate on natural gas in those countries. In the US, the EPA enforces unbelievably burdensome certification laws making a conversion cost near $12,000 as opposed to about $1,200 in other countries. So the Federal government is already interfering in the free market

  • Bad slant on a good bill. The real issue is there is no energy policy. The Pickens Plan is the only plan introduced that focuses on producing domestic sources of fuel and stopping the import of 65% of our oil. Focusing on domestic sources will increase natural security and create jobs. I have no problem with no subsidies for nat gas. Just make sure there are no subsides for any other energy source like oil and electric like there is now. Just make it equal. alternative will
