A unique census of grizzly bears in the Foothills and lower slopes of the Rocky Mountains in southwestern Alberta has found that the population is now so small that some experts question whether they will still be there in 100 years.
The new report estimates the number of grizzly bears living west and south of Calgary and south of Banff National Park, inside an approximately 7,600-square-kilometre stretch of land, at fewer than 100.
I agree and I get really annoyed at these people who get out of the car and try to get closer to the bear to take a good photo. Don't get me wrong, I like looking at the wild life as much as anyone but seriously, we need to respect them as they are dangerous and as Mike said, bear jams do occur

I have posted bear videos and the commenter above left me the same message (everycoldday 1 yr ago). I agree with Parks Canada policy and will move along when asked to by a Park Warden.

Habituation is bad for bears. As a tour bus driver I stop and allow a brief photo op. and then move on. We do not let people off the bus; to the bear it is a big stinky metal object. The problem is the motorists who suddenly stop in the driving lane, park poorly on/off the shoulder and get out of their cars! In Banff National Park it is illegal to feed or approach wildlife. A stopped vehicle on the Icefields Parkway will attract many more cars and buses until we have a bear jam. See bear vids.

These three cubs took a couple train trip to Feild, BC a few weeks ago. The bears in the parks are so starved for food in the spring that a train full of grain is bountiful feast.

Bears are four times more likely to die a human related death when get used to people watching them graze by the side of the road. This is called habituation. Park Canada is doing what they can to reduce the impact tourists in Banff National Park have on the wildlife. 3 million of these tourists come to Banff during the 8 week of summer here. That is alot of people for so few animals to see.
