Chatter Calls are very common during the nest site claiming period. They are used by both sexes to proclaim territory (the nest site and the area near it). Male tree swallows use chatters to repel other males and to attract females to the nest site the males have claimed. Female tree swallows chatter to repel other females. Chatters are often accompanied by wing flutters.
