(Also, as much as we're all just enjoying seeing this taboo broken, apparently that wasn't the whole point. The director thought of this strategy for winning a fight against bigger groups: hit the women; you'll still get beat up, but the women will take it out on their boyfriends for letting it happen for ages afterwards, so you 'win' in the long run.
Totally NOT advocating it, just saying that's where this scene came from (and I guess they made the woman so obnoxious so we wouldn't object).)
I'm a girl, and I LOVE this scene. It's really refreshing to see a person get what's coming to them sometimes, regardless of their gender. This character thought she could pick a fight and get away with it because she was a girl. Kudos to the characters who are so chivalrous they'd really never hit a girl, but it's damn fun to see it happen here. This is more like a political statement- "Being female does not make it okay to be an obnoxious, insulting, confrontational pig."
Although I will add that though I haven't seen the full movie (want to!), it does look like the GUYS are picking this fight on purpose (and Del Toro's character DEFINITELY makes it worse by assaulting that other woman in the crowd). But still, Silverman's character is so over-the-top asking for it that it's fair enough when audiences are delighted that they break the taboo and hit a woman.
Now to find an actual dvd or something of the full film....
Okay, that's fine... you missed my point entirely. It's a movie, supposed to be funny, which it was... I was just saying that the people commenting are just a little bit too into it.
First time I saw this I couldn't belive how this film dares to cros that (strangely allways abbsent draw) of a man beating the shit out of a woman in a rightsious and justified way, amanzing.
