Super-clean aquarium. Fill with water, let sit so the bubbles clear out.
For white smoke, like coffee creamer, black background. Backlight/sidelight the creamer, don't let light hit background.
For black smoke, like ink, white background. Use white card, not sheet, or else wrinkles are a problem.
Light the white card bright and even, no light on tank.

i do. it gives it a more realistic effect.

hi guys. great work. one day i hope to be an indy film maker, and i appreciate these tips for my future films. i used this concept to do one of me being dragged away in the air by a kite. if you have time, watch it and let me know what you think. thanks. ps (i only used adobe premier elements, so i did what i could.)

I liked it! Very nice. Don't you just love using handheld cameras?

You know, i think this is the same thing NBC did to make Nathan on Heroes look like he took off in the air.

We just saw a behind the scenes of that and it's a 3D character when he's off the ground and the rest is wire and stunt work. Our favorite is where he lands and slows to a stop in a cloud of dust. Badical!

if you answer questions...
what program do you use to cut the guy out frame by frame?

We used basic masks in After Effects 6.5 Professional, but masking in Shake is soooo much easier!
