@thrtrtyr Von Brauns group wanted to launch a satellite before USSR had launched Sputnik 1, but the government didn't let them do it, because the rocket was a military one. The Eisenhower staff wanted the first American satellite launched by a civilian rocket (the Vanguard). Von Braun launched a Juno I (not Juno II as I mistaklingly wrote down here) with a dummy as the top stage in 1956. If he had been allowed to use a real rocket instead of the dummy, it had been the first satellite.
@thrtrtyr You said: " In all reality we did not give a fuck about space until sputnik 1". USA had announced that it planned to launch some satellites during the International Geophysical Year 1956-57. It even announced on what wavelenghts the satellites would transmitt. The satellites were to be launched by the civilian Vanguard rocket. When it failed (after Sputnik), von Brauns group got the task with their Juno II rocket, based on the military Redstone and their Explorer satellite.
so you're telling me in the 1930s when Joseph Stalin proposed his second 5 year technological plans and economical plans that were depression busters, witch included finally putting a man in space originally planned in the 1930s, we were already planning that???? i highly doubt that we were planning that, we were barely even organizing the civilian conservation corps, and the Tennessee valley authority, and the rural electrification administration? how is that???
@thrtrtyr Actually, USA had planned to launch some small satellites, even before USSR launched Sputnik 1. And, at least the Air Force had plans to send some men out in Earth orbit.
why is every single confederate degenerate on here getting mad that the USSR got to space first. all our space projects in the 60s were derivative from the Russians. In all reality we did not give a fuck about space until sputnik 1. Because we saw the Russians making technological advances and we thought they were gunna spy on us but in reality they weren't. just be fucking proud that we (HUMANS) got up there, if the Russians did not test the waters no one would of.
