The developers have taken advantage of the recreational boaters in Marina Del Rey by raising slip fees by 50-60% now that the harbor has reached capacity. LA County is a partner and a spectator.
Los Angeles County wants higher revenues out of the public harbor which strictly contradicts House Bill 389 and Public Law 780 - doctrines that allowed the creation of the Marina for the citizens of L.A, California, and the U.S.
While there were some boaters that weren't assessed consistent increases you can't think that the marina operators weren't already making a lot of money on our recreational slips. To levy extra taxes, fees far beyond the value of the slips is inappropriate. The resulting "cleansing" effect has been deemed unlawful in many jurisdictions.
I don't think George Bush has that many friends, but yes Marina del Rey will be moving to a more exclusive clientele on the backs of the taxpayers who paid for it. Isn't America great!
I'm wondering if the recent rate increases are actually aimed at the long-time slip renters, who haven't seen too many such increases in the past. In other words, somebody in the county feels that boaters have been getting a free ride for far too long. Let's not forget -- a large percentage of these boat owners are claiming tax credits based on their boat being a 'second home', since their boats have a kitchen (galley), bedrooms (quarters), and living area.

How could LA County turn its back on recreational boating and let the developers out price the slips for the people who purchased the Marina?
