In Giacomi Puccini's very emotional opera, "La Boheme", the life of Mimi can be depicted as complete and fullfilled...albeit tragic and forlorn. Mimi's relationship with Rodolfo began beautifully upon their initial meeting. The primary elements in the 1st act, however-the darkness, the candle, the key- all would later unveil as pertinent foreshadowing of what shall be.

The darkness of the cafe where Mimi and Rudlofo met was hinted by a light of hope-the candle. But as if a premonition of what is to become, the candle then burns no more...and darkness would set...leaving only the remnants of a flickering flame.

And the key that Mimi was missing - that Rudolfo was later to find and give her - perhaps symbolizes that which Mimi's heart was missing...and would eventually be given by Rudolfo.

As such, the courtship between Mimi and Rudolfo was an endearing one. The relentless love between the two was filled with gaiety and spirit. Even the bonnet which Rudolfo so dearly purchased for his beloved Mimi would only be a small sentiment of the grander gift of love between the two.

But then...the candle is out. And in that darkness, Mimi is strickened with illness. Outside, there is light and laughter. But inside...the darkness has set.
Rudolfo must help. But without riches for medicine for his Mimi....he is....helpless.

And so....he leaves. He would only ask that Mimi find the love and sympathy of the rich viscount so that she would be better taken care of.

And Mimi's condition continues to deteriorate.

But she does not love...the rich viscount.

...And Mimi's condition continues to deteriorate.

And in her final times....she leaves the rich viscount, understanding that the riches of the heart is not sought and filled with monetary assets. --- She finds her way back to....Rudolfo.

And Mimi's condition... continues to deteriorate.

And deteriorate.

So that finally, in the arms of her beloved...she....passes on. Rudolfo. Helpess. Cries out her name..."Mimi!...."
...Helpless.

But perhaps Rudolfo was NOT...helpess, afterall. That perhaps...in their union, Rudolfo and Mimi have lived a love far greater than any would ever experience. That their love was all encompassing. And complete. And true.

And that perhaps Rudolfo...indeed found the key that Mimi was so missing. And gave to her...the key of his heart. And gave to her...the key of everlasting love and happiness. So that in all their days together, he had but already given her...life.
