Racquet acceleration on groundstrokes has quickly become an essential ingredient in any competitive players toolbox. The mysterious heavy ball is hit with a combination of speed and spin, both created by a fast-swinging racquet head. Heres how you can get a feel for it, quickly and painlessly. Simply hit a bunch of balls with your little finger off the bottom of the grip. At first you will feel like you are losing control, but it will only be temporary.

After about 10 hits, alternate with the finger on and off the grip. Your goal is to hit both ways with similar results. If youre still holding back from swinging freely, heres another tip. Use a racquet with no strings! The idea is to swing freely without fear of missing so the ball passes through the empty racquet face. The next step is to alternate racquets. Now your goal is to maintain the same swing with and without the unstrung racquet.

Another key ingredient of racquet acceleration is shoulder and upper body coiling and uncoiling. To help get a feel for this rotation, you can try a device called the Forehand Rotator that connects both arms across the back to increase shoulder rotation. Try using kinesthetic training aids like this one 10-15 times, and then remove the device, allowing the player to feel the action on his or her own.

The third and final ingredient to increase racquet acceleration is to better use ground forces. This time, to speed up the feel for a lower playing height, you can try to use something like the Flex Trainer resistance bands. This tool forces players into a lower playing height, which immediately increases ground forces to further increase racquet acceleration. Again, after a dozen or so forehands, remove the device and focus on maintaining that same amount of flex on your own.

The final stage of this progression to increase racquet acceleration is to use both of these tools at the same time. Now our demonstrator is getting a double dose of a good thing. These tools are designed to improve a players kinesthetic awareness or feel for using their whole body as a unit. Then, without the devices, you should focus on maintaining that same amount of lower body flexion and upper body rotation and racquet acceleration all on your own.

  • I play for 1 year but play better and higher spin than her.

  • @botakchee Congratulations! Am happy for you. The point of the clip is to share tips on how to increase swing speed and NOT to show that this one girl is either good, bad, or in the middle. Hope the tips help your game in the future or someone you know.

  • Funny thing is that we had to add the exhale sound after as this young player never would exhale at all. It is a little on the loud side, lol. If anyone watched (and heard!) the Sharapova and Azarenka final in Key Biscayne in 2011, you'd think they were paid in a conversion from decibels to cash!
