An exercise in responding to the partner's committed strike while within the tempo of that strike: the fighter who waits for his or her opponent's action to finish will be hit, but the one who prematurely anticipates can also be hit. Both partners must commit to their actions fully, and shift from offense to defense of vice-versa only when they feel their partner's pressure close off their own committed action. In the Italian art of Armizare this is an action in mezzo tempo, "within the time," while feeling the pressure of the adverse steel (sensazione di ferro) and in the German Kunst des Fechtens this is done in Indes, or "in between," by feeling ("fühlen") the pressure of the opposing blade.
