A Lithops (Living Stone) fruit capsule opens after being sprayed with water (time-lapse). In the wild (Southern Africa), rain will open the Lithops capsule and then splash out the seeds. There is a whole group of succulents, mostly from South Africa, that have the same mechanism as Lithops. They are collectively called mesembs because they belong to the family Mesembryanthemaceae. To see more of these types of succulents look at my slide-show videos "Amazing Mesembs" (in several parts because there are a lot of them!)

  • Do you need more than one lithops to get seeds? I only have 1 single plant, if I got another would they pollinate one another? Or do they self pollinate?

  • Most are NOT self-fertile, so you will need two individuals in order to get seed.

  • hi, nice video!, one question, how many time a lithop seed needs to grow like the one in your video?

    thanks!

  • Seeds should sprout in about 1 week (they need light to germinate). This plant is at least 4 years old since I planted the seed, but I don't have an exact date as I lost the label long ago.

  • are they available in canada

  • YES. Try a google search for "valley succulents" to find a Canadian online Nursery. Local Cactus Clubs may be able to help, a search for "cactus society canada" will help you find one near you.

  • Fantastic. Can't think why fruit never came into my mind. You have germinated an ambition in me now ... ;) Many thanx!

  • @CooleyBufo

    Ok thank you

  • Lovely video!! I liked hearing the spray and then the music--very cute <3 I'm so hooked to these little guys! I got one at Lowes last week :) They'd over watered it though. The soil was a little mossy and it was starting to split so I put it in 2/3 cacti sand mix to help it dry out fully. Last week I ordered 300 seeds :) Yours is stunning--very nice, bold color!!!

  • Thanks for posting video
