no they didn't. many 'original' automobile designs were based off of lead-acid (something like lead electrodes with a sulfur electrolyte) batteries, porsche had all-electric and hybrid based vehicles with electric motors on each wheel (which companies are still trying to manage now) almost 100 years ago.
so sad Chinese runs on a dynasty system that dont seems to work well. A new dynasty will get corrupted after a few generations because it is run by the same families over and over again. The problem with this is the new generations will try to keep the status quo to secure their power and wealth in turn slowing down society development and technological advances. Despite all these hardships, Chinese still became the greatest civilization ever known.
