This is one of several reasons IMO. Our schools are increasingly machines to produce obedience - another reason for K-12 education reform. The education I refer to is not one of recitation, but of **ASSESSING IDEAS (getting a little Grecian here :P). It follows along the lines of higher liberal arts education.

So, why are people so willing just because authority tells them to?

Right now, research points toward a psychological mechanism that transfers guilt from the actor to the authority figure. In other words, authority has the ability to shut down the human conscience.

Who is perceived as authority?

Studies show authority is perceived by most in how they look and present themselves, not with their achievements, history, or actions.

Relevant questions:
What is the "conscience"? Do we all have one?
Which has potential to be most dangerous, government or religion?
