Worship and appreciation of God's gifts don't always happen under a steeple. The Byrd chaperoned us on too many occasions from friendship to courtship, and we could think of nothing else to host the groundbreaking of our new life together.
Built in 1928 and named for William Byrd, II, one of the founders of Richmond, the Byrd Theatre straddled the era of silent pictures with the dawn of "Talkies". Awe inspiring workmanship of days past greets you in brilliant architecture and facade. Stepping inside the Movie Palace, bold and intricate decor transport you back to a slower time. Ambient light calms the mood as you settle in for a late night show. Prelude music from the Mighty Wulitzer, a rare treat on Saturday evenings, cuts through thoughts of the outside world and touches the soul.
April and I have always found the Byrd a place of solitude from the outside. The Byrd continues to inspire us and allow us time to pause and reflect, on our appreciation of life, the days of character, values and principles, but most importantly, each other in this non-stop, 24-7 world.
