Season 1, Episode 2

In episode two, we take a look at how the Famicom Disk System revolutionized console gaming (despite never being released outside of Japan), and the subsequent advent of the battery backup cartridge.

As a result, games like Metroid required a password "save" system when it came to the US because battery backup cartridges were not yet cost-effective enough. The Zelda games had a battery backup save that imitated the functions of the disk system, but neither game was capable of the expanded sound that the Famicom Disk System allowed, and so had to have its music and sound effects reprogrammed.

There's much more. Read our show notes to find out!

  • @laurentlasalle Hahaha, of course it isn't, but isn't the essence of comedy exaggeration?

  • are you zach braff?

  • @jerkastan Probably. See this /watch?v=F6-ECjmtVro and /watch?v=RDMJMSolnuI on YouTube to find out!

  • I have a question: On one of my Famicom disks (Caslevania) there isn't the white piece (I think the header perhaps?) on both sides and everytime I put it in the FDS it brings me Error 22? Is there any chance to repair the disk or something? THX

  • @Angelostar88 Usually once a disk is gone, it's gone. :/

  • I really really wish they had released the cassette drive in the US.

    I like cassettes...

  • Jesus Christ I hope you didn't actually use that tape as a means to record data :P. That is one of the awsomest records ever produced and to erase that tape would be a crime. Nice insert though :).

  • Oh, shimuta! LMAO

  • @denBlackie Glad someone else noticed too! I am a bigtime Queen fan.

  • @SeanOrange the joke got old 5 mins after it started.

  • the intro theme of Zelda II is sooooo nostalgic. It reminds me of when I was a kid, and everythime I hear it, it takes me wayyyy back.

  • I used to have a flesh wound like you. But then I took an arrow to the knee.

  • NeoGeo!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • ive been bloin in my nes games since 91,they all still work

  • I actually have a number of Disk Cards, and they all work pretty well. I also plan on doing a series of YouTube videos of my own, and one or some would include comparisons between NES and FDS versions of the same title.
