Read the Car and Driver test. They were able to stop all of the vehicles they tested using the brakes. Including that Lexus. They even stopped a Mustang Shelby Cobra, which is a 550 hp car. The guy panicked and was not thinking clearly. Everyone should take the time to sit in their car and run through a drill on what to do. In combat, soldiers often credit their training taking over. If you have planned out your actions in advance you have a better chance to avoid tragedy.

This family is dead, and instead of respecting the situation for the horrific end of a family that it was, people turn it in to Jesus comments, rude remarks about what they think the man should have done, ect... how does anybody know what the man tried? ballader its just not that easy. the way toyota vehicles igniotion works and their gear shifters like on a prius you can just shift into nuetral and as some of the complaints which were verified by dealers have shown you cant turn them off. Whoever is a toyota fan go ahead and be one. Its pretty foolish to support a company that lied and as for being cleared of anything its just that their computers dont show the problem yet its verified. I wouldnt own one of these pieces of junk. Death traps!

Wow people you really think that he didn't try it? If it were my family in that car, common sense is to try netural, pushing power off etc... The car was a loaner and the pos that toyotas are I imagine that it didn't work. Have respect people, this family is dead, STOP BADMOUTHING THE DEAD. Maybe we should stop trying to make hippy, "environmentally concious" pieces of crap and focus more on our safety, not what Mother Earth is thinking.

@excalibur8600 Just turning the engine off can make it difficult to steer the car, it would have been better to put it in neutral. However, a lot of people's reactions would have been the same - confusion, step on the brakes, panic when the brakes don't stop the car, etc.

Might have been different with a manual transmission as the use of the gearbox to slow down the car is a more natural manoeuvre for a manual driver, but still.
