An excerpt from a live Carnatic (South Indian classical) saxophone performance at the Ektaa Center in Irvine, California. The composition is Deva Deva in raga Malamalava Gaula set to Rupak talam (6 beats).
Prasant Radhakrishnan - Saxophone
Ajay Narasimha - Violin
Poovalur Srinivasan - Mridungam
Its in a 6 beat tala called roopakam that seems pretty far from klezmer to me.

In fact, not only the raga, but also the instruments, saxophone, violin and drum, and even this tala (which is like a duple metre), are not very far from what you might hear in traditional klezmer music.

Yes, you are right, and cantorial too, because raga Malamalava Gaula is similar to the mode called "freygish" in Eastern European Jewish music.

maya maalava gowla. the raga is pretty symmetric, hence the very first lessons taught in carnatic are all in this raga.
