  • Its in a 6 beat tala called roopakam that seems pretty far from klezmer to me.

  • In fact, not only the raga, but also the instruments, saxophone, violin and drum, and even this tala (which is like a duple metre), are not very far from what you might hear in traditional klezmer music.

  • Yes, you are right, and cantorial too, because raga Malamalava Gaula is similar to the mode called "freygish" in Eastern European Jewish music.

  • maya maalava gowla. the raga is pretty symmetric, hence the very first lessons taught in carnatic are all in this raga.
